Lesson on Immaculate Conception

December 8 – This is the Feast of the Immaculate Conception

I remembered when I was in preschool to early elementary, I studied at the Immaculate Conception Academy (ICA) Dasmarinas. That school was one of the famous and largest school (with a lot of satellite campuses) in town or in Cavite as well during my time. The reason why it was named ICA was the parish in the town proper is called Immaculate Conception (La Imaculada Concepcion) and of course during its feast day, the whole town celebrates and it was very festive.

I noticed today when I was in Novaliches that  my cousin has a class even if it’s Immaculate Conception. Usually, Catholic schools declare a no class on December 8 if it falls on a class day. My cousin’s school is St. Benedict, a Catholic School. My alma mater, DLSU also has class today, same with my little brother in Don Bosco Makati. These schools I mentioned are all Catholic schools.

At first I thought that it’s not good to have classes on December 8 because students won’t be able to go to mass.  But later on I learned that the schools I mentioned have celebrated masses for their students. I realized that it’s better to have class  rather than declaring a no class day because a student might not be able to go to mass (just stay home or go elsewhere). Having a class means to give them no option but to go to school and have mass.

Immaculate Conception is a Catholic dogma and a holy day of obligation. That’s why I think it’s important for Catholics and practising Catholics to reflect on this day. And I think it is very important. I went to mass a while ago. I learned a lot about Mama Mary. When we pray Haily Mary, we say that she is full of grace. Since she is full of grace, there is no space for sins. Thus, we say that she is an Immaculate Conception. Following this belief, the priest in mass said that the devil is afraid of Mama Mary because she is full of grace. That’s why one way of exorcism is to call Mama Mary when driving out Satan/demon. Also, to prevent evil from getting near you or your home, place a picture of Mama Mary and call on to her. Satan is afraid of her.

At the end of the day, we hopefully should have reflected on Mama Mary and the Lord. It’s amazing how Mama Mary can help us in resisting our temptations and prevent sins just by calling her.
